Maya’s Third Trim
November 13, 2010
We caught up with Peter and Nikki last Tuesday for Maya’s third major trim. The changes in her feet are phenomenal as you can see from the photos below. The hoof angle is now correct and growing down well and the soles of the rears no longer show the damage caused by the protrusion of the pedal bone. Maya’s body now shows much less of the pain she has carried for so long; she stands relaxed and walks freely. There is still quit a bit of work and healing to be done but remember the story only began on the 27th September 2010.
Above and below: The near hind is growing out well. Originally the worst hoof, the sole now has regrown and she almost takes an even amount of weight on it which lessens the strain on the muscles of the offside.
Above and below: The offside beginning to look like a hoof again.
The fronts above and the two pictures below are growing down healthy hoof and the soles are looking great.
A very different pony to the one we started on.
Looking much more balanced and comfortable through the hindquarters.
First hoof trim day at Imbil
November 7, 2010
with Peter Laidely was an excellent day of learning which put to bed some long standing myths, challenged some beliefs and saw us doing some great work under Peters watchful eye. We will look forward to holding more of these courses up here as this information is clear and relevant whether you are a owner, competitor, strapper, therapist, farrier or vet. If you are interested in joining us for one of theses informative, practical days, please contact us at equus@skymesh.net.au and we will ensure that you are kept informed of upcoming events.
Maya second trim
November 2, 2010
Maya had her second trim on 12th October. The changes already taking place in this pony are quite incredible.
In the first picture you can already see the changes with the hoof growth taking the correct angle.
We followed up Peter and Nikki’s work with a muscle release treatment.
The first treatment of muscle release therapy has begun to remove the stress caused firstly by the unusual angle of her hooves and secondly by the changes that have been made to correct them.
Above you can see she already has a much more comfortable stance.
Here you can clearly see the changes to the topline and hindquarter.
Maya’s story began when Peter found her on the 27th September 2010 and the final photos above were taken on the day of the second trim, which is also when we joined in to do the muscle work; the 12th October 2010. Maya has a long road ahead of her and we believe she is well and truly on the right track. Nikki and Peter will continue on with both the trimming and the muscle work and we will look forward to sharing with you the photos and the story of her progress.
Introducing Maya
November 2, 2010
G’day all,
We have been very fortunate to be able to start some information sharing days with Peter Laidely from Hoofworks and his apprentice Nikki. ‘Maya’ is the ‘project pony’ that Peter came across and on whom we will be working over the coming months. We will share Maya’s story with you here as it is quite remarkable to see the changes that are occurring not only in her feet, but throughout her whole body. So we will begin at the end of September when she arrived.
If you look closely at her hind feet you will understand why she was chosen as the project pony.
The pictures below taken the same day are a closer look at the hind hooves.
The fronts are a bit overshadowed by the condition of the rears but here is a closer look at them as well.
The tension present in her whole body is indicative of her pain.
On September 30th 2010 some x-rays were taken to show what was going on inside the hoof.
The above plates clearly show the changes that have taken place.
Maya’s first trim day was 1st October 2010.
Firstly, the changes to the fronts.
Then the hinds….
A closer look underneath the hind
The last picture in this series (below) shows the hind feet protected. Note the tension still present throughout the pony’s body.
